Baby Kainoa's Grandma Karen Quilt

My good friend Chrisann is having a baby any time here.

It is her fourth son, and they are VERY excited!

This sweet baby is a long time coming!

I have been making memory quilts for Chrisann and her dad and siblings from her mother, Karen's clothes.

Karen passed away a few years ago from Multiple Myeloma.

Chrisann's little boy will be named Kainoa.

That means, strength of the ocean.

I thought wave quilting would be perfect :)

I used the same clothing for Kainoa's quilt as I used for his moms.

This quilt came together over night, literally!

I started working on this at 7:30 pm.

The neighbors showed up at 8:30 pm for a visit. (It was such a fun surprise!!)

At 10:30 pm I resumed working on it until midnight.

I laid in bed awake until 3:18 am, decided to get up and shower and then work on the quilt.  At 5:18 am (I find irony in the time), I got back into bed and slept until 9 am.  I bound and labeled the quilt from 9:30-11 am...and made it to the baby shower just in time ;)

The backing is made from Grandma Karen's bathrobe.  So soft!

The quilt is 40"x40" 

Karen's Quilts for Christmas

(I got a new laptop for Christmas so I can finally blog again :))

Just before Christmas, I received a special custom quilt order from a dear friend whose mother (Karen) passed away a few years ago.  I have made two other quilts for this special family.

This time the quilts were to be made for Karen's three daughters.

I finished them back in December.

This beauty was made for Chrisann, my dear friend.

It, like all of the rest, are made from Karen's clothes.

Each quilt has a special label for each daughter.

This quilt is my favorite and is for Heidi.

The red and white are so perfect together.

All of the quilting was done by the AMAZING Stacy Simmons.

This cheerful quilt is for Jenn.

Many of these clothes were worn in Karen's last few weeks of life.

It is always such a special privileged to make a quilt for someone out of their loved ones clothes. 

 I really cherish the opportunity!

The binding is on these three custom quilts. 

I did the same backing and binding for each of these quilts. 

The fabric for the labels will arrive on Thursday so I can get these to the customer. 

I am so happy to get these finished :-)

Customer Quilts

I have two more tops ready to be quilted for a customer order :-)

(Because of the crazy grandbaby business, I am sending them out to be quilted)

These are made from Karen's shirts. Karen is my friends mother who passed away a few years ago from Multiple Meyaloma. 

I have already made a quilt for Karen's husband and one for her son. 

These two are for her daughters and one more is nearly complete for her other daughter, Chrisann, who is my good friend. 

I just love the sweet sentiment behind each one.

In 2009, my friend Chrisann's mother, Karen,  passed away.

This quilt was made for Chrisann's brother Terry.

Terry's wife, Ruth chose the pattern from one of my first quilts.

I used some of Karen's clothes to make the quilt.

I made one for their father last Christmas.  Blogged HERE.

For the back, I used a grey chevron minky.

The quilt is for Terry's birthday :)  

Construction notes:  I used Pellon featherweight fusible stabilizer on the back of the knits.  I thought it was the same kind I had bought before , but it was not :/  This stabilizer was to thick.  It made for very difficult and laborious quilting.  I ended up breaking THREE needles while quilting it.

Karen's Quilt

Three years ago my good friend Chrisann's mother (Karen) died of Multiple Myeloma.  I don't have to tell you that this was heart breaking for Chrisann and her family.

Earlier this year, Chrisann asked me if I might be able to make quilts from her mom's clothes.  Chrisann and her siblings thought that a quilt out of her clothes would be the perfect Christmas present for their dad.

Chrisann and her sister went to her parents home and picked out some clothes that went well together.  As fate would have it, Karen had mostly red, white and blue clothes :)

Karen also loved her designer clothes.  I saved the tags from the clothes and put them here and there on the quilt.

I was thinking this quilt looked a little Ralph Lauren ;D

For the backing, we used a navy minky, super soft and cuddly :)

It was very interesting to make this quilt.  VERY emotional!

I was surprised at how hard it was to cut into Karen's clothes.  Karen was very loved by her family and she loved them so very much as well.

Hopefully this quilt will provide a little snugly comfort.
