The Bloggers Quilt Festival Rainbow Fishes

WELCOME to my blog :)  I am SO happy you have stopped by for a visit!

I am a new quilter and have gone a bit bonkers with quilting over the past 9 months.  You can read about my quilting beginnings HERE.

I am so excited to be participating in the Fall Bloggers Quilt Festival!!  Whoo Hoo!!!  I am entry #258.  If you like what you see, I'd LOVE your vote :)
Check out the Festivities and vote HERE

I have had such a hard time trying to figure out what to say about this quilt.... (it's late, I am tired and for some strange reason, I am out of words!) lol (if you know me, I am almost never short on words)

So, on with the quilts story..... At my mqg we received 75 different 6" squares to make a hst quilt.   I surfed the internet looking for what I'd like to do with them.  I fell in love with Red Pepper Quilts HST Overload quilt.  I had my heart set on making mine just like hers when my sweet hubby lost his job and I needed to make due with my cute little stash :\  No worries!  I had a pile of AWESOME green that would not only make due, but turned out pretty FANTASTIC! ;D

I used THIS method for making my hst's.  It's the BEST!! :)
Super EASY and no trimming!  Oh the joy's of bias.

The back is a piece of fabric ended up with in an odd sort of way.  My sil got it out of her grandmothers home after she died :(  It is WAY old, but it totally works!  Happy day :D

Now for the reason I call this Rainbow Fishes!  Can you see the fishes?  I always thought the blocks looked like fish, but my visions were confirmed when my 11 year old son walked in the room and exclaimed, "HEY MOM!  THOSE ARE COOL FISH!!!"
My other children now all concede that they look like angel fish :)  Score one for the mom!

NOW, here is the deal about the layout.  I was thinking that the blocks should be laid out randomly, but the thought came to me that I should arrange them by color.... but how.  I tend to try rows and stripes, but no, I didn't like that.  That is when this "round the quilt" color wheel came to be.  If you will start at the top right of the quilt and move around clockwise (or counter clockwise) you will see that the colors change and blend into the next color on the color wheel. :)   Yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, red, orange and back to yellow.

In order to make this quilt square, I had to add 6 more blocks.  The original 75 did not include red, do I added the red to give me the full(ish) spectrum! :)  In my additions I accidentally added a duplicate print :(  Can you find it?

I bound it in the same green after auditioning many different fabrics.  The green binding just disappears and lets the rainbow shine :)

Here are the quilts stats:

Quilted my me and my cute little Pfaff and it's AWESOME squeaky walking foot ;D

Frenzy Friday

...I really like alliteration :)
Today was hubbies day off so very little anything got done today ;)  I FINALLY finish my Creative Sewing block for March-

There is only one block and it really has the blue square in the middle, but it is supposed to be purple.  I didn't cut the purple correctly so I had to sub a blue scrap.  I am thinking that I am going to do a quilt of this block for my dad.  The block is from the Creative Sewing class last month.  It is made with the small flying geese ruler by quilt in a day.  I am too tired to capitalize ;D
I also cut my 8" blocks for the Broadbent's Modern Quilt Group tomorrow morning.  The fabric had to be red white or blue stripe.  I had a REALLY hard time finding fabric that I liked for this.  Here is what I came up with

I sure hope it is alright.  I can't wait to see what others brought.
Lastly, I was asked to be a guest blogger on Annie's Ruby Slipperz Saturday :)  What an honor!  Thank you Annie!!!  Head on over and check out Annie's AWESOME blog!
I think there was something else... hmmm... Oh yes!  My fabric came today in the mail from The Intrepid Thread!  I can't wait to cut into it :)  thank you thank you thank you!!!
Here is the picture of the fat quarter bundle.  I forgot to take a picture of it and am TOO tired to go do it now ;D
Sleep tight everyone!!

The Black & White Zig Zag Quilt is Finished :)

I am so happy my black and white bricks quilt finished.  I attended my first meeting of the Broadbent's Modern Quilt Group in Lehi this morning.  It was SO fun to meet the ladies.  There were so many cute quilts and GREAT versions of the black and white bricks.
I had a few errands to run and then got home about 1.  I started to baste the quilt about then.  I had it quilted and bound by 9.  I did run a few more errands and fixed dinner, bathed the boys and tucked them in too ;)  Now to clarify, by cooking dinner, I mean getting my 10 year old to put the left over Chicken Carbonara in the microwave :)  They ate it all so I had a brownie for dinner ;)  My hubby went to the REAL game and I should really come up with another sewing project for tonight ;D

My name :)  This is my version of a lable.
I LOVE the binding :)  It is from Flea Market Fancy.  The green is PERFECT ;D
Of course, I used minky for the back.  I had this pink and thought it would be perfect with the black and white.

LOTS of photos!

So first things first, I had tons of chores to do, starting with this HUGE pile of clean laundry to fold.  I made myself a deal, 10 minutes of folding laundry, 60 minutes of fun with fabric :)  Here are the pictures of my progress ;D

This is my piles all finished.  It's as good as it ever looks ;D  It feels good to have this out of the way... for a few days, or maybe minutes ;) (the stuff in the green basket is folded.. socks and undies)
A SUPER cool package came today :)  It is my Going Coastal fabric.  Isn't it cute???

Star Fish

Sand dollars

AWESOME crabs!!!

Cool Kelp

Plaids and Caps

Everybody hanging out!

A stack of PURE joy!

Now for the quilting :)  Since I don't have the backing for Reagan's quilt, I decided to work on the zig zag quilt for Broadbent's Modern Quilt Guild.  My first meeting is this saturday and I want to have this quilted.  I am going to put pink minky on the back.

Because the quilt blocks are on point, when they are trimmed at the edges, they edges are on the bias and tend to end up a bit wonky.  I asked Konda how I could maybe help this problem.  She suggested spray starch.  It seemed to work REALLY well.  This is the kind I used.  I won it at the Creative Sewing quilting class last month.

Project order for the next two weeks...

#1 Bind Anna's quilt... at night while I pretend to be watching TV with the family :)
#2 Sew Ashley's quilt top, hopefully quilt and bind it.
#3 Quilt and bind Ford's quilt.
#4 Reagan's quilt
#5 modern quilt guild quilt top
This will get me caught up.  The backing for Ford's quilt should be here tomorrow.  I don't think I can get to his tomorrow at all.  I will plan on laying out Ashley's quilt while she is at school.  It will sew together pretty quickly.  Next week I need to do Reagan's quilt.  So I just need to have all of these quilts done by a week from next saturday, the 17th.  Oh wait, plus the modern quilting guild quilt top before Sat the 17th.  Ashley's quilt can actually get bumped again as her birthday is not until July :)  So lets look at this logistically...
Monday.... morning, cut binding and sew it on Anna's quilt.  Layout Ashley's quilt.  Afternoon, baste Fords quilt, nope, he'll be home and see it....  Ashley goes to work at 4 and I can sew on hers from 4-6.  I can baste Ford's tomorrow night after he goes to bed....  That is a full day and will require me getting up and on the elliptical early with chores and shower also EARLY!  I'm going to bed :) ...in a minute
Tuesday- quilt Ford's quilt.  Possibly sew on binding depending on how well the quilting goes.  Note to self- I need to get Anna's quilt bound first, before Ford's.
Wednedsay & Thursday- I'll have to get everything done I can on these two days as my sil is coming to town Thursday.  I feel good about getting Ford and Anna's quilts finished and Ashley's top done.  I can work on the modern quilt guild quilt when the kids are around.  They can see that one all they want :)  Here is a link to the quilt guild quilt.

This is the quilt guild's example.
This is what I am going to do, from Crazy Mom Quilts.
I'll do black and white zig-zags with the
bricks on white.  I'll bind it with black and white
stripes and put pink minky on the back :)
