Adventures in NOT reading instructions!

So, I was over at SadieBirds blog looking at her 1600 quilt.  So CUTE!  Anyhoots, there was a link to the original blog for instructions.  I clicked on it and it did not work :p  So I just figured I'd wing it. (turns out that blog was down for a few hours yesterday :)  After I had sewn all of the jelly roll strips together and was about to start to sew my two ends together, I though, "I should cut this first strip in half, or at least down a bit."  But NO, I said to myself, (in the same thought bubble), "She just said start sewing the ends, no mention of a cut."  :p  Dummy me just sewed it all together, wondering how hers was staggered and mine was not.  Oh well.  That is what I get for not pursuing the instructions further when a link TO THE INSTRUCTIONS is not working.
Also, this was not a full jelly roll that I used.  It is the jelly roll that I got from my sister for my birthday and it is one of those half jelly rolls ;)  So, when I got down to the end-ish, I had to divide the long strip into thirds to make a perfect crib sized quilt :)  I suppose that I could have just sewn it in half again and the stripes would have just gone the long way... hmmmmm...  Well here is what I ended up with :)
I apparently did not shuffle my colors well enough.  I just divided the pile of strips into two identical piles of fabrics and this is what happened.  I learned a ton and I am glad that I did on this little jelly roll that I didn't buy ;D  It will make a good shower gift or maybe I'll donate it to Primary Children's Hospital (SLC).  I have some vintage teal gingham from my sil that I can back it with and it is small enough for scrap batting :)

I also got 4 more blocks of my dad's quilt finished this weekend.  I am half way done.  I can get it finished in time for his birthday on Thursday if the planets will align for me.
The lawn was wet, so I used the trap as a back ground.  The pictures are weirder than usual as they are all taken in the full sun :)  I almost sent my kids out to do the photo shoot.  I thought they might come up with some fun shots.  Maybe next time!
Everybody getting some vitamin D together :)

These are the 4 new guys.

  1. Your star blocks are so pretty together! Love that yellow! We've all made mistakes when quilting. We all learn from them! Your baby quilt will make someone happy no matter what!

  2. My dear Girlfriend! There's a video on youtube by Jenny from the Missouri Star Quilt Co. about how to make the jelly roll race quilt. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bEJLnaZQOU She starts with cutting off the first about 18 inches :) Watch it and you'll get the hang of it for next time when you actually buy that jelly roll! I'm so sorry it didn't work out for the first time, it sure looks like fun! Your Daddy's quilt looks awesome, I love the cheddar background on it. It'll look really pretty when you're done!

  3. :) I think we all have stories like that--so frustrating! My seam ripper and I are a little too well-aquainted from situations like that. The star blocks are gorgeous!
