My New Quilting Platform

So with all of my fmq, I am really in need of a quilting platform for my sewing machine. I have looked on line and they are SO expensive for how simple they are. Alas, I am too cheap to order one :( So, I do the next best thing... I ask my dad to make me one :) He readily agree and this morning I headed over to assist him in the venture. First we have to haul a 4x8 sheet of mdf from the garage to the basement where my dad's shop is. The wood was being used to park a leaky car on. We found a corner that was in very good shape. Anyhoots, we cut a raw square out of the large sheet. This is my dad doing that :)

This is my wonderful dad :) He's wearing his special, "I'm gonna be covered in sawdust out fit ;)"

Here is the raw cut rectangle. I need the finished size to be 17x21 so this is a bit bigger than that.

Here it is at the table saw getting it's first cuts.

This is the band saw cutting out the rectangle where my sewing machine will go :)

Now to make sure hat the fabric wont catch on any corners, my dad, using a highly technical device ( a small paint jar), drew an arc to make rounded corners :D

Then it all got a pass by the router (is that the right kind of router?).

Here is my dad devising a design for the legs. We are using scraps. This platform is very Eco friendly :)

Here is the whole thing all glued and clamped.

And here is is all set up at my sewing table (waiting for the full 24 hours to use) drying. I think I will stain it for slickness and durability :)

Total cost... FREE! Spending the morning with my dad, PRICELESS!!
ps- it took less than "Cloudy, With A Chance of Meatballs," to make :)

  1. Lucky duck! I need one of these too. I went to Home Depot to get some insulation to make a table extension out of it. I'll post pictures when it's done.

  2. Funny, my daddy has the same outfit and he wears it mostly to my house. Great idea for an extention table.

  5. I had to read this to figure out what a quilting platform was. Looks like you had a grand time with your dad.

I have an extension table that came with my machine somewhere. I know I loaned it to my DIL at one point. She and I are short. So our solution was to get them to build us sewing tables that the machine dropped into. There is your next project for you and DAd!
